Finals for the BBC Norman Beaton Fellowship
On Monday and Tuesday this week I found myself at Broadcasting House putting my best foot forward as one of 12 finalists (out of several hundred initial applicants) in the running for a contract with the BBC's Radio Drama Company.
On the first day we received a brilliant workshop in both the technology and technique of radio drama - learning terms like 'spot effects' and 'panelling' as well as how to keep your script quiet! - from actress extraordinaire Adjoa Andoh, and on the second we presented assigned group pieces, duologues and our own prepared solo speeches.
It was fascinating to hear the range of voices, accents and vocal qualities in the room and I learned a lot from the process. I wasn't ultimately successful in being offered the contract, but I'm told many good things may come of it in terms of future freelance work, and more chances to learn how it's done.
