Honouring Stephen Jeffreys at The Kings Head Theatre

Through Feb 2022, The Kings Head Theatre presented ‘KHT50: Barstools to Broadway’ in celebration of 50 years of fringe theatre. Their brilliant team has dived into the dusty archives and re-mounted plays that started at the small but mighty pub theatre – many for the first time since their original staging.

Performers included Dame Harriet Walter and Gemma Whelan, as well as Joel MacCormack and I, who played Romeo & Juliet together last year!

Like Dolls or Angels was Stephen Jeffreys’ first ever play, picked up from the NSDF in 1976 for the Kings Head’s lunchtime theatre programme, a vital incubator for emerging writing talent at the time. Stephen went on to Paines Plough and the Royal Court, his play The Libertine was adapted into a film, and he nurtured generations of writing talent.

We were directed by Complicité co-founder Annabel Arden, and the rehearsed reading was followed by a fascinating Q&A with Annabel, Olivier Award-winning playwright April de Angelis and Mark Ravenhill, new AD of the theatre.

Hannigan and Zuki want to get into the Guiness Book of Records. Well, Hannigan does and Zuki is his golden goose. With his band of talented women – including a harem of Death Wall motorbike performers – Hannigan is determined to make his fortune. But will everyone survive his ambition?
