I had the privilege of contributing to this gorgeous music video by my friend and collaborator AJIMAL. It warmed my heart and raised my spirits in a time where that’s harder than usual to do. Give it a watch and a share, your friends will thank you.

AJIMAL’s words:

Above All Else, Be Kind is about the importance of valuing caring, kindness and humanity. I wrote in 2016; the day that Trump won the US election, in a mixture of total disbelief and sadness. It felt like the world had just taken a big step in a dark and unnerving direction. It compounded a growing feeling that we only seem to be aware of our own individual circumstances; increasingly intolerant and suspicious of others; too busy to engage with people around us and unwilling to recognise that they might be struggling.

It feels like it has particular relevance in this strange moment where, as a planet, we’re faced with something that threatens the lives of millions of people if we don’t act together. The video was made during the week I had to self-isolate in my room with symptoms of Coronavirus. The idea was to ask friends, fans, family and colleagues, from both the medical and music worlds I work in, to hold up a line from the song. Even though we can’t be in the same place at the same time, I want it to be a show of solidarity.

There is a song-less sky of still

If I were struggling for breath, who’d clasp me close?

Who’d bear my breathing As I gasped in death?

There is a dark that light can’t kill

Within the blinding fear it fills

If I were huddling for warmth, who’d clean my clothes?

Who’d share their blankets?

Or would I freeze alone?

This is not difficult or radical

This is fundamental.

This is pivotal.

This is the most important:

Be kind

Be gentle

Be mild,

Be simple

Be patient,

Be peaceful

But above all else,

Be kind
